Palm Oil
Palm oil is an important crop in Thailand – However it has many problems, among with the low price of oil is a prominent factor affecting is productivity and profitability. On the other hand, the high prices of fertilizers are driving plantations to use less and less, thus lowering yield. Plantations are now trying to develop alternative systems of fertilization for improving crop yields at a lower cost and EM is used in many instances. We are pleased to present a case study of the use of EM, where hormones are fermented with EM and applied for greater efficacy.
I. The cultivation process
1.1 Land preparation
- The planting hole is made in well developed and prepared soil.
- If soil quality is poor, a planting hole of dimensions 50 x 50 x 50 cm is prepared and organic matter such as leaves and animal manure is added to fill half the hole. Into this, add 1 – 2 handfuls of well prepared bokashi, spray EM (activated) ad a dilution of 1:1000, and allow it to ferment for 7 – 8 days after mixing. Planting is done thereafter.
1.2 Crop Establishment
- When planting the roots need to be well covered by soil in the planting hole.
- The area around the plant is mulched with grass and plant debris to protect it from emerging weeds
- Soon after planting, the plant is sprayed with EM (activated) at a dilution of 1:1000 to wet the soil.

1.3 Crop Maintenance
- To each plant 1 – 2 handfuls of bokashi is added once a month and EM sprayed in the same manner. In order to enhance the efficacy of EM, please mix the EM with solutions such as EM 5, EM rice rinse water and EM fermented fish extracts.
Please note – Organic matter is essential for oil palm plants if chemical fertilizers are to be withdrawn for cost reasons. Furthermore, EM also needs organic mater.
Please spray EM and EM 5 at dilutions of 1:1000.
Remove any weeds around the plants and use them as mulches to cover soil or mix them into the soil after spraying with EM. This will accelerate the decomposition processes.
