EM in Sri Lanka
APNAN visited a farmer living near the EM unit at Homagama in
In the early days, he applied chemicals to his allotment – especially for chilies. However he noticed that with time, yield declined. On a visit to the EM unit, he was told of the technology, which he adopted. At present, he is an avid enthusiast of EM and Nature Farming, and over the past 6 months, his fields have produced greater yields, which have made him happy and healthy.
Although a beginner, he is a real enthusiast of EM – and is reading as much literature as possible. The EM unit is also happy about this and will use these fields to hold workshops for the people of the area to promote EM technology.

The microbial way
IN 1982, Dr Teruo Higa of the University of Ryukyus in Okinawa, Japan, discovered a group of naturally occurring micro-organisms which can be combined for various beneficial uses. He named them Effective Micro-organisms (EM) and patented the name.
As a commercial product, it is registered and sold as EM•1 by licensees worldwide. The major micro-organisms in EM•1 are lactic acid bacteria, yeast and phototrophic bacteria.
Higa initially developed EM as an alternative to the use of chemicals in agriculture. Through research over time, EM was found to be effective in other fields, including environmental remediation and livestock operations.

Fleeting effect (Newspaper)
Mudballs enriched with Effective Micro-organisms which can degrade pollutants are not a cure-all for polluted rivers.
THERE’S a new fad among Malaysians – shaping balls of mud and then tossing them into rivers and ponds.
It is all part of the noble effort to clean up our foul waterways. And much to the surprise of many sceptics, these pains seem to be bearing fruit.

Relief for river
SUNGAI Pinang in Penang now has the nasty ranking of the seventh most polluted river in the country. It’s a title which the state Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) director Hanapi Mohamad Noor hopes to shake off.
And he reckons using Effective Micro-organisms (EM) mudballs in the river, plus curbing pollution from going in, will do the trick. He is optimistic as EM mudballs and EM solution applied at two spots in the river (near the wet market and jetty) since January have borne results.

More apologies to Mother Earth
Dr.Higa(Left) and H E the Chief
Minister YAB Tuan Lim Guan
Eng(right)
A ceremony was launched on 8th August, 2009 in the State of Penang, to make people aware of the environment and its importance. The event was aptly called "One million Apologies to Mother Earth." The principal objective of the event was to enhance or improve the quality of the rivers and seacoasts in Penang, which at once time was called the Pearl of the Orient, but with time had been polluted primarily due to human activities. Thus the project used EM technology to clean these waters and the State of Penang wished to be the leaders to show the world the benefits of this simple but effective technology.
The project paid emphasis to the use of mud balls, and H E the Chief Minister YAB Tuan Lim Guan Eng inaugurated the launching ceremony on the 8th August 2009, in the presence of Professor Dr.Teruo Higa at 0830 Hrs.
The participants threw 250,000 mud balls made with EM into the Gurney Drive bay. In total, the participants added 1.2 million mud balls to rivers of Penang and there were over 25000 people participating.
The entire event was a great success - and thus the director of the Penang State Drainage and Irrigation Department promised to use mud balls on a regular basis. He claimed " We will throw mud balls into rivers in stages over a six-month period" !!!! This will be done until the water quality of the Penang and Juru rivers are improved from Class 3 to Class 2as per the standards adopted in Malaysia.
We are sure that this project will be successful and will update the information with time.

Balling mud for good cause
The below is the newspaper article from The Star, in Malaysia. (4 August) EM activites in Malaysia is very very hot!!
IT was a messy job but it was all done in the name of saving Mother Earth.
Forty teams had loads of fun making some 10,000 EM (effective micro-organism) mud balls in the EM Mud Ball-Making Contest organised by the Auto-City Group in Penang on July 27.
Each group was given an hour to produce as many of the EM enriched mud balls as possible. Everyone tried to stay clean in the process but it was a tough task with streaks of the mud getting onto clothes and faces.
The team led by Yeoh Yee Hong, which made 446 mud balls, won the top prize. They collected a RM500 food voucher. Second and third placing went to teams headed by Head Ai Khee (415) and Fong Ling Shin (412) respectively.

EM activity in Bhutan
The SAP in the Kingdom started with 6 pilot schools. Today there are 1600 schools incorporated in the project from a total number of 525 within the Kingdom. The program has integrated Nature Farming with crops, swine, poultry, cattle and aquaculture. The approach to these projects is totally organic with the use of EM technology. EM technology has been taken up very positively in terms of educating the parents and communities by the students.
The main objective of the program are
· To inculcate the dignity of labor among the younger generation.
· To transfer the agriculture technology to parents and community.
· To supplement the class room teaching with practicals for scienceand geography lessons.
· To encourage self help groups for producing their own vegetables for hostel and generate employment in future. Some of the students will become future educated farmers, who will use EM for gardening.
We expect the students become good EM technical instructors within the Kingdom through this project.

EM in Penang
One million apologies to mother earth (EM event in Penang, Malaysia)
The State of Penang is a hotbed of EM activities, especially in environmental management, using the technology of Effective Microorganisms for cleaning rivers!!
The Penang Government Institute for Environmental management (PGI-EM) is thus launching an environmental bioremediation project and awareness campaign called “One Million Apologies to Mother Earth” on 8th August, 2009. This is based on a demonstration project carried with the Kelian River of the State of Penang, with EM. The result has been amazing – where the use of EM has cleared the sludge built up over 50 years in just 3 months!!
The event is on 8th August 2009 – and the Guest speaker will be Prof. Dr Teruo Higa, the founder of EM technology.

EM USE IN A CATFISH FARM IN JOHOR
A cat fish farm in Kota Tinngi, located in close proximity to the EM Factory of JAMOF, in Johor, Malaysia is owned by Mr. Shaharum. The farm is 4 acres in extent and has 20 cages, each cage of dimensions 1 x 2 1 m. The farm purchases fingerlings from the market and grows them up to a mean weight of 150 g and then resells them in about 12 weeks.
The success of the farm is the use of EM. The water in the cages is changed once a month, and during this process they add EM to obtain a dilution of 1:1000 or 5000. The foul odor that was present in earlier times is now absent and the fish have less disease, grow well and of excellent quality and taste. Thus this catfish fish are now famous and has a very high demand and the suppliers are unable to meet the demand.
